Ubuntu 9.04

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

If after installing a new operating system on my computer I lost all audio and had to endure a bug which resulted in a persistent pop-up window, I would not normally be writing a glowing review of that OS.

I am for Ubuntu 9.04, code named “Jaunty Jackalope”.

Those things did happen to me when I upgraded from Ubuntu 8.10 to Ubuntu 9.04. It took me several days reading all sorts of cryptic crap on several sites to fix the afforementioned problems.

However, I have no regrets.

I have seen two “taking it to the next level” end user spectacles with computers. The first was the slickness of Windows 95 when it first came out. The next was seeing my friend plugging in somebody else’s video camera into his Mac laptop and having playback instantly work.

Now, the third.

Ubuntu 9.04 boots in 15 seconds on my computer.

You read that right, 15 seconds. Fifteen seconds from the time I turn my computer on until I am prompted for my password.

After more than a decade of enduring agonizingly long computer start up times this is truly an amazing innovation.

The bugs I experienced aren’t guaranteed for everyone. If you are comfortable with futzing you can fix these bugs yourself with only a modicum of pain. I highly encourage you to try out the latest Ubuntu. The lightening fast boot-up time is amazing.

Kudos To WordPress

WordPress makes blog software in addition to providing a free blogging service like blogspot. I pay for my own host for beforewisdom.com. My host uses wordpress software. I recently got a note that it was time to upgrade.

Upgrading for ordinary people is like Christmas morning. Promises of all sorts of goodies. For people in the IT field upgrading is more like “The Shining”. Upgrading often means lost data, broken features, and a plethora of hassles.

I backed up my entire domain to my hard drive, documented all of my customizations and I made an upgrade plan.

I didn’t need any of it. The upgrade took 5 minutes and everything worked fine out of the box. Not one hassle.

My hat is off to the good people at WordPress.

Yahoo Web Mail Changes

Monday, September 8th, 2008

I’ve been avoiding the new Yahoo AJAX based email interface. Too many small annoyances and I feel like Yahoo is unresponsive to those issues. Lately, I’ve been noticing some small and annoying changes to their “classic” interface. I asked around and found that indeed Yahoo has updated this interface — without options to set it back to the way you like it:

Yahoo used to be good about allowing their users options to change what they don’t like. Not so much anymore. I’ve also been getting annoyed by a lack of responsiveness from Yahoo, especially since I pay for my account. These things and the threat that Microsoft may buy yahoo has made me start experimenting with Gmail.

Add to that when I went to stop auto renewal for Yahoo Mail Plus they yanked my extra services, despite me being paid up to the end of November!

Anyway, I thought I would post that link for other Yahoo users who been wondering WTF is going on with their email.
